Dental Exam

A dental exam is a routine part of a workup for a person having radiation treatment of the neck. I've long had scheduled this dental exam at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center(SFVAMC). I'm not getting radiation anytime soon, so I attended the dental exam as a bit of a luxury.

Most veterans do not receive any dental services. It was a nice extra.

I have pretty good teeth, perhaps that is too much information for publication, but then again this whole blog could fall in the TMI category. As a wee stripling I had about three fillings for cavities. The dentist at that time used metal, silver-mercury amalgam. About four years ago I had another cavity filled, in a kind of rushed last minute way by a dentist I wasn't going to be seeing anymore as my dental insurance was set to run out. This most recent "adult" filing was the newer tooth-colored plastic.

Four years later (about two months ago) one of my fillings falls out. Guess which one?

On Friday the SFVAMC center dentist put in a replacement "metal" filling. I am very pleased to have this done. They did careful, good work. Today, they did a cleaning and thorough exam. I've been pronounced cavity-free. Other than some ongoing coffee staining, my teeth are still chompin'.
